An opening can be described as the first completed action, event or important exposition rendered by the film.
A narrative opening, which is the specific type of film opening that we have chosen to use, is described as an opening which introduces it's main elements of the story at the beginning: This can be done by revealing the setting to the audience, via text or via the use of a voice-over monologue.
In a Narrative film opening a series of conventions need to be incorporated to help the audience interpret and understand the initial idea and elements of the story. Conventions that need to be considered within our film opening will be as followed (this isn't necessarily in the exact order) :
- Introduction of the key characters
- Introduction of the beginning of the narrative (or pre-plot)
- establishment of the platform/scene
- The main credits such as the Production & Distribution companies.
- The film title.
- A key event will occur
- non diegetic sound will feature.
- maybe an equilibrium (which is a balance between several different influences or aspects of a situation.)
'Remember the Titans' is an example of a film which features a Narrative opening. Unfortunately I couldn't find a longer clip that featured the film opening at the EXACT start, showing ALL the main conventions - though as I've seen the beginning of the the film myself before I know it features text showing the production companies and a series of shots revealing key characters of the film. This clip, however still presents how the opening starts to introduce the actors and actresses names, and uses a voice-over narration, and with the aid of text to introduce the initial elements to the story to the audience.
Our film will have a similar opening, though, as ours is a thriller, it will differ to this as it will have a more thrilling element to it.
