Color correcting, rendering footage

Editing

Here we rendered our footage in the anamorphic filter to make it widescreen.Big budget movies use actual lenses to create the wide screen however as we are creating a low budget film opening we had to use final cut pro.

Here colour correcting was used to balance out the footage  - we used a mixture of different lighting, such as lighter and darker tones. In order to do this we had to drag the small circle within the middle, to different parts of the colour scheme. At first, we found it difficult to drag the small circle as the precision made it difficult to move freely, but after it was straightforward we used a light blue for a try out but we concluded it wasn't suitable colour and we experimented onwards with various lighter and darker tones.

Creating Characters for the credits

Creating Characters for The Opening Credits

We decided to come up with suitable names for characters that we're going to use for people of the creditWe're basing the order in which the characters appear, on particular conventions of film openings that we have studied. An example of one film opening that we've seen is The Room Mate. This inspired us to choose what credits we would introduce and how they'd be introduced.

Adding Sound using SoundTrack Pro

Adding Sound using SoundTrack Pro

We have chosen the sound 'Cave and Wind' to use with our clip. The clip we are attaching sound to, is the beginning of our opening. We nicely decided on using this sound as it is simple and suggests an eerie, tense atmosphere which goes with the overall feeling of our movie opening.

Here we applied the sound to the clip to make sure it fit properly with what was happening within the clip.

Filming

Heres Ryan with the equipment after filming a few needed shots to add to our film opening.

Here Dami and Ryan are both looking quite cold after spending the morning filming in Abney Park.

After our filming in Abney Park as a group we headed to Sharina's house to complete our film opening with the scene of Dami waking up after a bad dream.

Heres Ryan filming the scene.

Both Dami and Sharina in the scene.

Editing Our Film Opening Tortured

After Viewing the shots both myself and Dami had an attempt at editing the shots also adding fades and colour changes.

Both Dami and Ryan checking if the effect works.

Research into Film Openings

The opening to our Thriller will feature a Narrative Film Opening.

An opening can be described as the first completed action, event or important exposition rendered by the film.
A narrative opening, which is the specific type of film opening that we have chosen to use, is described as an opening which introduces it's main elements of the story at the beginning: This can be done by revealing the setting to the audience, via text or via the use of a voice-over monologue.

In a Narrative film opening a series of conventions need to be incorporated to help the audience interpret and understand the initial idea and elements of the story. Conventions that need to be considered within our film opening will be as followed (this isn't necessarily in the exact order) :
  • Introduction of the key characters
  • Introduction of the beginning of the narrative (or pre-plot)
  • establishment of the platform/scene
  • The main credits such as the Production & Distribution companies.
  • The film title.
  • A key event will occur
  • non diegetic sound will feature.
  • maybe an equilibrium (which is a balance between several different influences or aspects of a situation.)

'Remember the Titans' is an example of a film which features a Narrative opening. Unfortunately I couldn't find a longer clip that featured the film opening at the EXACT start, showing ALL the main conventions - though as I've seen the beginning of the the film myself before I know it features text showing the production companies and a series of shots revealing key characters of the film.  This clip, however still presents how the opening starts to introduce the actors and actresses names, and  uses a voice-over narration, and with the aid of text to introduce the initial elements to the story to the audience.

Our film will have a similar opening, though, as ours is a thriller, it will differ to this as it will have a more thrilling element to it.

Check out of Filming Location

Abney Park

On my way home from college after my media lesson I decided to take a viewing of Abney Park as a group we had made it an option to film our thriller opening there.I took a few images of statues and grave stones we could use in our opening as they are infact quite scary. Also gates and crosses that could be use to add to the religious sub genre within our opening. Abney park was fairly muddy so filming our main character in socks is not such a good idea.

This image of a tomb i took could also be useful as we needed some sort of gates to feature in our film opening as filming in the church would need permission.

This photograph that i took of this statue could be used within our film opening as the long narrow pathway behind could be useful for our main character to run down. Also the leaves and trees could also be used for effect.

This image of the cross with the church behind it could also feature in our film opening. From viewing all the statues it helped create a better idea of how filming in Abney Park would work.

On the way out i took an photograph of the map, the park is infact bigger than what i expected as i have never visited it before.
